Working when there is a pandemic

5 minute read

This is sad times for everyone around the world with loss of loved ones, businesses struggling and loss of work. This post is here to help you work so you can look after those close to you.

Governments around the world need critical workers (NHS staff, doctors and nurses on the front line) and with this schools have to be open in part. If you are not classified as a critical worker, one or both parents may have to stay home to look after children or elderly relatives.

It's easy for the IT sector to say we have remote working. The reality is many that in many businesses can also benefit from remote working without mass changes.

Other sectors may include: Accounting, HR, and Marketing. These departments in many businesses can be home workers with little effort.

Some worry about productivity levels dropping. By setting schedules and targets you can get a set of tasks completed each day. This helps reduce timeouts for social media or browsing the web.

Technology Solutions
-Email and file access can be accessed via a number of ways. These are commonly Cloud storage, VPN solutions, Terminal services. Out of the 3, Office 365 has helped many small businesses working remotely without investing in costly IT solutions.

-Meeting up with colleagues using systems like Microsoft Teams you can have meetings with one colleague or many. In addition you can utilise audio, video and screen sharing.

-Phone calls can be made with the help of our telephone service. You can make calls on the move with a mobile app for iPhone and Android. For roaming staff, you can simplify the solution by using our software solution for Apple Mac and Windows.

Health and Wellbeing
When working from home, you will fine you don't get as much exercise (unless you already do this in the mornings. This is be you can start developing a habit of get up later and stroll into work as you don't need to prep in the morning to leave home and join the traffic with many others going to their place of work too.

It's important that you have an exercise routine. Recently promoted on YouTube is "PE with Joe Wicks". With COVID-19, we are encouraged to stay at home. These exercises help you stay in shape with 20-30 minute morning sessions. Looking after your back and neck is equally important. We have some tips from a Physio in Hampshire courtesy of Natalie March.

It's important that you:
• have a desk
• have a good supportive chair
• have a riser (for laptop users) so the top of screen is at eye level
• ensure your monitor is an arms length distance away (approximately 51cm away from you)
• have a separate keyboard and mouse
• have a separate monitor to plug into too as this will help with productivity
