When it comes to our decision process, some of us look at the short term problems and some of us at the long term. There is nothing wrong at each scenario. Here we look at the differences for you to decide what action to consider.
We will take our focus away from IT and to real life scenarios for a moment. When it comes to our homes one of the biggest risks is the kitchen. We have the possibly of a fire from food we make to a towel near the gas. Most of you will have smoke alarms so that we are alerted to an incident before it gets any worse. On many occasions, we hear our smoke alarms sound very quickly, but it's a false alarm. At other times, they help save our homes and most importantly our family members. Here we didn't cure a problem, we prevented it from getting worse.
Another scenario is we lock our cars and homes to protect our family members. Why? This is to stop children opening the car doors as we are driving from one location to another. In the home, we don't want out children to run outside or open the door to strangers. We have protected our family members and you could say we prevented a number of incidents occurring.
A final example is the prevention of illness. From the time a child is born, they have a number of injections to stop disease later in life. This health check we provide for our family is there to prevent them getting ill so they can enjoy more of their time.
We could add more examples, but now is a good time to say how this blog post relates to your IT systems. As with the third example on illness we look after the health of our family, but how much consideration do we give towards the health of your IT systems? This can be related to the performance of our computers, the delays we may experience accessing shared files, prevention of viruses on across our network and managing updates.
